Pulmonary Physiology

13985049

Description:

Learn and understand essential concepts rather than just memorize facts

Concise, yet complete, Pulmonary Physiology 7e provides students with a solid background in the areas of pulmonary physiology essential for an understanding of clinical medicine. The figures, key concepts, tables, and appendices summarize the material in the book and provide an outstanding review for the USMLE Step 1.

MASTERY OF CONCEPTS—NOT MEMORIZATION OF FACTS With Michael Levitzky's clear and involving presentation of pulmonary physiology, you learn how and why the human respiratory system works—in a format that makes it easier to absorb and to integrate as you learn the physiology of other body systems.

FIRST CHOICE FOR PULMONARY PHYSIOLOGY
* Offers a tried-and-trusted route to learning pulmonary physiology
* Provides you with objectives at the start of every chapter
* Summarizes key concepts at the end of each chapter with locators indicating the location of the material in the text
* Makes learning easier with enhanced illustrations of all essential concepts
* Reinforces learning with new study questions and clinical examples at the close of each chapter
* Explains difficult concepts thoroughly, without oversimplification
* Covers respiratory function under stress—exercise, altitude, and diving
* Offers the best review for the USMLE Step I
* Provides handy appendices of symbols, gas laws, equations, pulmonary function decision tree, and normal values table

This fifth edition uses graphics, tables, and examples to introduce to basic pulmonary physiology. The previous edition was published in 1995. This book is written as a refresher and introduction to basic pulmonary physiology. The goal is to provide a broad based knowledge of pulmonary physiology. These are worthy objectives which are well met by the author. The audience is first year medical students, respiratory care practitioners, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. The author does a very good job of combining technical descriptions of respiratory physiology with graphic and practical descriptions. The author addresses the physical process of respiration from the interrelationship of basic lung mechanics to the microscopic changes at the alveolar level of gas exchange. The chapters on the mechanics of breathing and the controls of breathing are descriptive of how and why we breathe, while the chapters on alveolar ventilation, perfusion, and diffusion are illustrative of how gasses exchange. The physical properties of gas laws and diffusion principles can sometimes be challenging, but the author provides adequate tables and descriptions to aid the reader in relating the physical principles to the physiology. The chapter on "non-respiratory" functions of the lungs and the chapter on how the lungs respond to stress are especially noteworthy. The practical applications and descriptions to respiratory disease processes aid the reader in understanding how changes in physiology may lead to a commonly seen ailment. The text and examples provided create an easy to read and understand picture of the respiratory processes. This book compares very favorably to other texts used as an introduction to respiratory physiology and is a good review for medical students, respiratory care practitioners, or nurses.

ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery

14757382

Description:

THE ASCRS TEXTBOOK OF COLORECTAL SURGERY is the first official textbook of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) (www.fascrs.org) that adheres to the principals of evidence-based practice and utilizes ASCRS practice parameters. Written by top experts in the specialty, each chapter correlates with the core curriculum developed by the Program Director's Association in Colorectal Surgery. Chapters include Anatomy, Physiology, Genetics, Diagnostic Evaluation, and Perioperative Management. In addition, a ground-breaking online component is updated periodically with new information for the busy surgeon.

With 56 chapters and over 800 illustrations, including 64 color, The ASCRS Textbook of Colon and Rectal Surgery is destined to become a classic. It is a must-have reference for residents and fellows in training, as well as practicing surgeons.

This comprehensive book on colorectal surgery provides updated information in the field, such as anal fistula plug, laparoscopic surgery, Remicade, etc., for both residents in training and masters. It is complete with diagrams, color photos, high quality imaging, and algorithms.

Most importantly, the book is based on the core curriculum established by the Association of Program Directors in CRS and incorporates the practice parameters developed by the ASCRS. It unifies both colorectal doctrine and state-of-the-art information.

The book is targeted to subspecialists in the field of colorectal surgery, both those beginning their careers and those who are experienced. It is the coming together of both junior and senior staff that makes this an easy to read yet detailed book.

Both benign and malignant disease of anorectal and colorectal anatomy are addressed in this book. A chapter devoted purely to vascular disease of the colon and GI bleeding is missing, but touched on in the other chapters. The last five chapters deal with nonmedical issues, such as healthcare economics and reviewing the literature, that are vital to practicing physicians and refreshing to seasoned readers.

This is a long awaited textbook for those in the field and it does not disappoint. It is brief and to the point, but does not lack the necessary detail expected from a society-produced publication. I found it more up-to-date and less verbose than the classic text Colon and Rectal Surgery, 5thedition, by Corman (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005) and more specific than Current Therapy in Colon and Rectal Surgery, 2nd edition, by Fazio et al. (Elsevier, 2004), but with the same easy-to-read quality that enhances comprehension for the trainee. It is by no means just a student textbook. The inclusion of ""hot"" current topics, like the anal fistula plug, makes it fresh and useful for experienced surgeons. This is an excellent addition to the colorectal library.

Clarke's Analysis of Drugs and Poisons

01

Description:

This practical manual and standard reference work provides an authoritative source of analytical data for drugs and poisons. It is intended for use primarily by scientists faced with identifying and quantifying these substances in body fluids, tissue samples and pharmaceutical and industrial products. This completely revised and updated new edition now comprises two volumes housed in a handy slipcase. Clarke's Analysis of Drugs and Poisons is an essential requirement for all forensic and crime laboratories, toxicologists, clinical pharmacology departments, poison information centres, pathologists, clinical toxicologists, hospital pharmacists and analytical chemists. Clarke's Analysis of Drugs and Poisons was previously published as Clarke's Analysis and Identification of Drugs.

This book is designed as a desk and laboratory reference for the analysis of drugs and poisons. It provides general background on chemical instrumentation most commonly used in forensics and toxicology. It also provides a compilation of chemical and physical data on drugs and poisons. Since the original edition was published in 1986, about 400 new monographs have been added.

The purpose is to be the reference for methods of analysis for drugs and poisons. This is a worthy albeit difficult goal. If the authors have designed the book for users who have chemistry degrees and significant forensic and toxicology experience of probably 5 or more years, then it probably has significant merit. However, a recently degreed chemist with limited experience could not take this book and perform an analytical method such as determining simazine in stomach contents.

The authors seem to leave the target audience somewhat ambiguous when they indicate forensic and toxicology practitioners. In my judgment, this book would only be useful as a analysis (methods text) for very experienced users. The authors are well known and have considerable expertise in the subject.

The first part of volume 1 is a presentation and discussion of general classes of drugs and poisons, for example metals and pesticides. Additional topics in the first part of volume 1 include quality control and metabolism and pharmacokinetics. The quality control chapter could benefit from additional explanation of standard operating procedures (SOP) often required in many studies. Also references should be provided for the incredibly brief discussions of U.S. GLPs (FDA and EPA) as well as the EU guidelines. The second part of volume 1 is a presentation of analytical instruments. General description and operation are well described. Unfortunately, oftentimes the most difficult part of a method for the analysis of a drug or poison is the sample preparation (extraction, isolation, etc.) prior to instrumental analysis. In the HPLC chapter, there is no discussion of sample preparation, in the GC chapter, sample preparation is too brief. Either expansion of the instrument chapters should be considered for future editions or a chapter dedicated to sample preparation and isolation should be added. The health and safety section in general notes is a total of four sentences. The first sentence indicating that this work is to be used by qualified experienced scientists probably says it all. Although the book is for very qualified scientists, a reminder about specific safety issues for each method may be warranted. Volume 2 is a nice compilation of chemical and physical data for drugs and poisons.

Ophthalmologic Drug Guide

15591311

Description:

Ophthalmology has long been considered a surgical area because so many disorders/diseases are treated surgically rather than medically. In the past ten years, however, there have been considerable therapeutic breakthroughs in non-surgical treatments. For instance, anti-glaucoma agents have becoming increasingly effective. This edition will include a new chapter for retinal disease. There are now several pharmaceutical agents being used to treat these diseases. Specifically, age-related macular degeneration has many new products – macugen, lucentis, etc. – and intraocular infections are primarily treated with intravitreal medications. Additionally, the anti-allergy and dry eye markets have grown tremendously in the last 2-3 years (endura, restasis, xibrom, etc).

This up-to-the-minute, handy pocket reference, Ophthalmologic Drug Guide offers snap-shots of all the relevant information on the whole range of therapeutics agents used in eye care. Using a topic-based approach, both the resident and the experienced physician can quickly find both prescription and OTC therapeutics to match their patients' needs. With an emphasis on such recent developments as the increasingly effective anti-glaucoma agents and the expanding number of anti-allergy and dry eye products, the authors provide busy clinicians with the information they need in an easy access, quick reference format. This useful guide includes chapters focusing on emerging retinal drugs, treatments for age-related macular degeneration and the intravitreal medications used for intraocular infections. A "pocket brain" for ocular pharmacologic agents and OTC treatments. Ophthalmologic Drug Guide gives the reader the latest information in a handy, portable reference and helps improve patient care and patient outcomes.

PsychoSomatic Medicine (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins)

15248008

Description:

Psychosomatic Medicine is a book providing a fresh approach to mastering the concepts and practice of modern consult-liaison psychiatry for residents and practitioners. The comprehensive 2-color book includes psychosomatic medicine symptoms, diagnostic dilemmas, and the interaction between numerous physical and psychiatric conditions. Special topics addressed include diagnostic and classificatory dilemmas, women's health issues, pregnancy, sexuality, ethical considerations, drug interactions, and more. Section openers written by the book's editors tie the chapters together and draw interesting and helpful comparisons.

This book focuses on current practices and concepts in consultation-liaison psychiatry. The field of psychosomatic medicine has recently been identified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a subspecialty with certification. As such, the authors intend to further define the specialty and produce a comprehensive resource. Chapters review an exhaustive list of topics that a consultation-liaison psychiatrist may encounter.

The authors define the audience as psychiatrists and primary care physicians needing to understand connections between their close, yet disparate professions. They choose to cater to a broad range of knowledge bases, including students, trainees, and practitioners. The contents may somewhat advanced for junior students. The editors are leaders in consultation liaison psychiatry education and research. The chapter authors are credible academicians.

The first of the book's five sections reviews abstract topics in the field such as history, classification, measurement, and the influence of culture. Strangely, a chapter on forensics is included in this section. In most textbooks of general medicine and psychiatry, this topic is relegated to the rear. Sections II and III, respectively, review the medical conditions and psychiatric conditions. Section IV chapters include special topics, such as women's health, psychotherapies, pain, and ethics. Personality disorders is covered in this section, and not included in the psychiatric disorders section. Section V reviews future perspectives including genomics and medical informatics.

The Patient History (Evidence-Based Approach)

14560953

Description:

Thoroughly updated, this text is designed to teach and reinforce the proper practice of problem-centered history taking. After a brief review of the steps in history taking, the book then discusses the entire patient by organ system, suggesting questions and analyzing potential responses in a decision-tree format. Each chapter includes characteristic physical signs and laboratory results. Features new material on alcoholism, sexual history taking to include female sexual dysfunction and assessing the risk for AIDS, and impotence.

Tierney (U. of California, San Francisco), Henderson (U. of California, Davis) and contributors present a patient-centered text for novice health care professionals. They begin with general symptoms, and work through a series of detailed questions to get the most from the initial contact with a patient and situation. They cover basic concepts—such as patient-centered interviewing and the evidence-based approach to clinical decision making—continue with a list of general symptoms, such as dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, and muscle weakness, and then address a variety of systemic symptoms, such as the cardiovascular, neurological, and psychiatric. They close with a chapter on communicating about and presenting the case.

This is a well organized and comprehensive book that teaches a systematic approach to the establishment of a differential diagnosis by maximizing the information that can be collected and developed from a patient's history.

The history is used to establish a differential diagnosis based upon the patient's presenting symptom. Principles of evidence-based medicine are applied to bridge the art and science of the history-taking component of the diagnostic process. This not only leads to the effective use of one's time, but equally importantly, to a much more enriched interaction with the patient.

This book is ideal for medical students, house staff, and any clinicians dedicated to refining their skills in this area.

The background information nicely and succinctly covers the artistry of the patient interview, as well as basic concepts of the evidence-based approach to clinical decision making. The body of the book covers symptoms, the associated differential diagnoses, prevalence data, alarm symptoms and likelihood ratios, and diagnostic approach, often with accompanying algorithms.

Kaposi Sarcoma HerpesVirus - New Perspectives

23995460

Description:

Kaposi sarcoma (KS) emerged in 1981 from being a rare curiosity mainly affecting children in sub-Saharan Africa and elderly men in Eastern Europe. The epidemiology of KS in HIV+ and HIV- individuals proposed that an infectious agent, other than HIV-1, is involved in the pathogenesis of this tumor. In 1994, Chang and Moore (Columbia University, NYC), used representational difference analysis to identify sequences of a novel human herpesvirus (Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus, KSHV) in AIDS-related KS. Phylogenetically, the virus is closely related to herpesviruses in pan troglodytes and gorilla. Molecular epidemiological studies show that KSHV fulfils most of Koch's postulates to be the causative culprit of KS. During its evolution, KSHV has pirated numerous cellular genes, and these could be directly involved in oncogenesis and it has evolved elaborate mechanisms to modulate host immune responses, providing unique insight into tumor immunology. This issue discusses some of the most important aspects of the pathophysiology of this virus.

Marks' Essential Medical Biochemistry

15248253

Description:

Based on the Second Edition of Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach, Marks' Essentials of Medical Biochemistry has been streamlined to focus on only the most essential biochemical concepts important to medical students. The authors present facts and pathways to emphasize how the underlying biochemistry is related to the body's overall physiological functions. This text presents patients to the students as the biochemistry is being discussed, which strengthens the link between biochemistry and medicine and allows the student to learn about this interaction as the biochemistry is presented. Each chapter includes clinical and biochemical notes and comments, questions and answers to encourage further thinking, and suggested references for those who would like to pursue a particular topic in more depth.

This book is intended as a text for a medical biochemistry course. Derived from a more comprehensive book, the emphasis is on clinical applications.

The goal is to provide a clinically relevant introduction to biochemistry. Given the perceived distance of biochemistry from most patients, this is a worthwhile objective. In general, this goal is met, albeit not completely.

The intended audience is the student taking medical biochemistry. The level is appropriate for that group. The authors have had experience with this material.

This book is derived from a more comprehensive text prepared by one of the coauthors. The intent is to focus on clinical relevance to bring the biochemical material into context. The book has six sections and an introductory chapter devoted to discussion of fuel sources and the principles of metabolism. The overall format is standard (structure, gene expression, metabolism). In each section, clinical vignettes are offered to illustrate key features of the biochemistry under discussion. Although somewhat contrived, these do provide a sense of clinical relevance. Each chapter ends with a summary of the clinical material and a short, supplemental reading list. Although illustrative material is essentially black and white, it is satisfactory for most purposes. The goal of providing medical relevance combined with some reduction in level of detail will make this attractive for many students. A glossary would have been a useful addition as would a set of study questions designed to emphasize the in-context nature of the book.

Pediatric Orthopedics in Practice

20555297

Description:

To "train to be straight" is the original meaning of the term "orthopaedics", which was coined over 250 years ago by Nicolas Andry. But how can the "trainers" straighten the crooked bones of children? Should we simply let nature take its course in the growth and development of children? Or do we need splints, braces, corsets, or even surgical operations, for straightening what is crooked? Do skewfeet stop Cinderella from turning into a princess? Are children warped if they are knock-kneed or bow-legged? Written in an entertaining style, this book contains scientific information, though-provoking topical quotations and amusing cartoons. The translation of the newest edition of the well-known classic "Kinderorthopädie in der Praxis" communicates the latest findings in pediatric orthopaedics in an informative and comprehensive manner. This book provides answers to everyday questions in the field of orthopaedics and pediatrics, highlights all aspects of diagnosis and includes detailed information on therapy.

This book covers the care of children with orthopedic problems.
Purpose:The purpose is to present a comprehensive reference for primary care physicians. It also serves as a valuable knowledge source for practicing orthopedists and orthopedic trainees who care for children. These objectives are met in most cases.

The main author, Fritz Hefti, MD, is Professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Basel and Chief of Children's Orthopaedics at Children's Hospital in Basel, and his four collaborators, Reinald Brunner, MD, neuro-orthopedist; Carol Hasler, MD, pediatric traumatologist; Franz Freuler, MD, illustrator-orthopedic surgeon; and Gernot Jundt, MD, bone oncologist; assisted in preparing a number of chapters. Natriuretic Peptides - the Hormones of the Heart

01

Description:

The rapid evergrowing knowledge in the field of neuro-humoral regulation of cardiovascular pathophysiology is changing the picture of current diagnosis and treatment of cardiac patients. The emerging conceptual revolutionary idea is that heart acts not as a pump, merely, but as a "gland", that is as a regulator of circulatory homeostasis and salt-water balance.

Cardiovascular pathophysiology has to be written, indeed, on this basis: no physiology textbook is up-to-date in describing the complexity and novelty of actual knowledge. The platea of either physiologists or clinicians involved in the study of the cardiovascular system and care of heart patients will accept with favour such an approach, combining the classical heamodynamic view with the new neuro-hormonal paradigma.

This book explores the cardiac natriuretic hormone system from its theoretical beginnings to its clinical applications in cardiac and extracardiac diseases.

The aim is to show the heart as a multifunctional and interactive organ, highlighting the complex interactions the heart has with the endocrine, nervous, and immune systems.

This book is written for both clinicians and basic scientists. It explains the interaction of the cardiac natriuretic hormonal system and the classic physiology of the heart in a manner that is easy to understand without downplaying its complexity.

It covers the development and application of natriuretic peptide biomarkers and their clinical applications. The clinical considerations of cardiac and extracardiac diseases are especially well covered by incorporating the latest study data with sound explanations.

Pediatric Trauma (Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, and Treatment)

16680329

Description:

The definitive text on the state-of-the-art in pediatric trauma care, this reference offers detailed descriptions of procedures in system design, pediatric resuscitation, supportive care, diagnostic imaging, pain management, and transfusion therapy by experts with hands-on experience in the field. Providing evidence-based recommendations, as well as current articles on rehabilitation, long-term outcomes, and infection control, this guide is invaluable for all professionals focusing on the needs of children with life and limb threatening injuries.

Twenty-four chapters and a subject index are included in a hardbound text of over 400 pages. Content begins with system considerations for management of children with injury and continues through general support including stabilization, imaging and critical care. A final third of the text is focused on pediatric injury in specific body regions such as head, face, chest, abdomen and extremities. Two final chapters describe rehabilitation concerns. Chapters are clearly written but a consistent organization pattern is not followed. Frequently, guidelines, if available, and relevant to the subject matter are reviewed. Illustrations are infrequent and reproduce with inconsistent quality. Tables, flow diagrams and line drawings are presented with greater clarity. Each chapter is referenced though a consistent pattern is not followed. Some chapters emphasize secondary sources while others focus on primary literature. The vast majority of references are six years old or more. The table of contents provides evidence of chapter authorship and subheadings are identified. Nine pages for a subject index provide adequate content access.

Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas & Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology

13699862

Description:

Wolff (dermatology, Medical University of Dermatology) adds 300 new color photos (over 950 in all), many focusing on people of color, to this fifth edition of a reference for clinicians, students, and other health care providers. More than half of the material is restructured and completely rewritten and updated. New icons provide at-a-glance information on incidence and morbidity, and there is a new chapter on how to make a diagnosis. This fifth edition also includes new listings of web sites for selected conditions.

This fifth edition dermatology atlas continues the tradition of excellence set by the late Dr. Thomas Fitzpatrick. This new edition has even more clinical color photographs and includes up-to-date eruptions from biologic therapies. As always, the clinical discussions on presentation, epidemiology, treatment, and pathogenesis are superb.

The purpose is to educate all physicians on common clinical dermatologic problems. Rare syndromes are not the focus of the book. If a non-dermatologist is going to read only one book on dermatology, this is it!
Audience: The audience is all physicians and medical students. Everyone can learn something from reading it.

The clinical synopses on the various skin diseases and the photographs are outstanding. The diseases are rated as to seriousness and commonness, a new feature since the last edition. The book is well organized and easy to use as a quick reference/refresher. Each section can be read in under a minute.

Middle Ear Surgery

15017967

Description:

This comprehensive, richly illustrated textbook provides a systematic approach to frequent otological operations. Procedures in surgery of the ear canal, acute and chronic middle ear diseases, otosclerosis, cochlear implantation and vertigo are visualized step by step to acquaint the beginner with proven surgical repertoires. Even the experienced surgeon will find valuable hints and suggestions to facilitate routine middle ear operations.

The purpose, according to the authors, is to provide a step-by-step introduction to middle ear surgery for the young surgeon. They also feel that it may be a resource and source of discussion for the more experienced surgeon. The authors have achieved these worthy objectives.

The atlas is intended for otolaryngologists. Although the primary audience is newer practitioners, residents may find this helpful as well. Various techniques are described for each procedure, thus making it of interest to experienced practitioners as well. The authors draw upon their vast experience.

This book thoroughly covers middle ear procedures, but also includes some discussion of neurotologic procedures as well. Chapters on evaluation of patients and decision making for surgery begin the book. Each chapter defines the procedure and reviews the indications. The procedures are described well, and the remarkable figures used to demonstrate the operations are the main highlight of this book.

Atlas of Women's Dermatology - from Infancy to Maturity

17133964

Description:

Proving again that a picture is worth a thousand words, Atlas of Women's Dermatology: From Infancy to Maturity is an encyclopedia in pictorial format. The book illustrates diseases and conditions that demonstrate the very different morphology between the sexes. It includes clinical entities that help complete a section or because the lack of gender difference makes the clinical presentation significant. The chapters are organized by anatomical topography, and each includes 10-15 color photographs with concise captions, and a reference list. The second section is based on physiologic changes found from infancy to maturity, and a third section covers cosmetic procedures and camouflage methods.

This atlas is proposed as a companion to the textbook Women's Dermatology: From Infancy to Maturity which was published in 2001. The atlas consists solely of photos and diagnoses of dermatologic conditions in women.

The authors have compiled this atlas in order to provide more photos for the textbook. I have not seen this textbook and so cannot comment on whether the atlas is a useful adjunct or not. The atlas does have 122 pages of color photos, most of which are of good quality and may be useful in augmenting a textbook with a paucity of photos.

The preface makes no mention of the intended audience, but I assume it is for the practicing or training dermatologist. The authors appear to credible authorities.

The book consists solely of photos and their diagnoses. These are arranged somewhat haphazardly, some chapters by morphology (pigment change, papulosquamous), some by cause (drug eruptions, viral), by location (breast, vulva), by area of skin structure (nails, glands), or by patient group (newborn, pregnancy). The chapters which focus on dermatoses in specific locations (breast, oral, perineal, vulva) are useful as well as the chapter of pregnancy related conditions. These often get shortchanged in dermatologic textbooks. The book by itself is not very useful; there are no descriptions, explanations, or discussion of conditions and the somewhat arbitrary arrangement of photos would make this a difficult book to try to use as reference.

Handbook of Pediatric Strabismus and Amblyopia

16591699

Description:

Based on Dr. Wright’s classic major reference, Handbook of Pediatric Strabismus and Amblyopia outlines the latest findings in diagnosing the most commonly presenting problems in pediatric cases, offering the most complete assessment tools for accurate diagnosis and then best treatment options. Distilling the essentials of these prevelant and sometimes complicated cases into a portable, complete and authorative pocket reference, this handbook offers a complete picture of how to best treat pediatric patients. Specifically, the introductory chapters on the specifics of pediatric ophthalmology (embryology, post-natal development and the pediatric exam) will help newcomers to pediatric practice fully grasp the subtle differences in pediatric care. The chapters are written by leading experts in the field and are presented in a user-friendly format, relying on heavily illustrated in color plates, clinically helpful tables, charts, and decision-making guidelines. This approach will enable the practitioner (whether specialist or generalist) to make the most accurate diagnosis and choose the most effective treatment option.

This handbook-sized volume covers basic and advanced concepts, helpful clinical pearls, and diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical techniques for pediatric amblyopia and strabismus.

The purpose was to create a convenient, easy to understand resource that emphasizes key concepts in strabismus and amblyopia, as opposed to just rote memorization, for use in the clinic, in discussions with families, and as a board review resource. These are worthy objectives; a clear but in depth, well organized, excellently illustrated, and handy book is very much appreciated. Fortunately, the authors meet their objectives with flying colors.

According to the authors, this book is intended for use by ophthalmologists studying for boards as well as by new and experienced clinicians treating children with these conditions. As a pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellow, I found the book to be right on target from laying the basic foundations for understanding the pathology, the clinical exam, therapeutic decision making, and surgical approaches. I think the book has enough advanced discussions and clinical advice, opinions, and pearls to be valuable for a more advanced practitioner as well. The authors write with an experienced and credible voice.

The book covers the pediatric eye examination, including detailed explanations of sensory and motor examinations, eye movement physiology and anatomy, important concepts of visual development, binocularity, and amblyopia. Detailed chapters cover the common and rarer types of strabismus, surgical techniques, ocular motility disorders, and some clinical optics pearls. The book is very well illustrated, and the chapters are well organized and flow well. All of the chapters are thorough and educational, and offer a good, sound foundation of understanding of strabismus and amblyopia. The book is also nicely sized as a small handbook which easily fits into a briefcase or bag. Its portability makes it more available when one gets a free moment or two to get in a few pages of reading during an otherwise busy schedule. I am really hard-pressed to find faults with this book. Clearly a book this size cannot serve as a full surgical atlas, for example, but that is not the intent, and it still does a good job of discussing and illustrating various surgical approaches and techniques.

More than 50 clinical cases help you excel in your microbiology coursework and on the USMLE Step 1

The Case Files series is an award-winning learning system proven to improve exam scores. This series helps you to learn in the context of real patients instead of simply memorizing. Case Files: Microbiology: Second Edition presents 50+ clinical cases with open-ended questions which weave basic science concepts into the clinical scenario. Each case includes an extended discussion (including definitions and a pathophysiology discussion), key points, and 3-5 USMLE-style comprehension questions.

Each case includes an extended discussion (including definitions and a pathophysiology discussion), key points, and 3-5 USMLE-style comprehension questions.

This is a very well designed review book covering all areas of clinical microbiology that capitalizes on the need of trainees to refresh knowledge prior to taking standardized examinations.

The purpose is to provide a review of clinically relevant microbiology. This book would be helpful to medical students and residents as a review before board examinations.

This would be an excellent review book for medical students, medical technology students, and nursing students as well as medical residents preparing for examinations. With their vast amount of experience, the authors are well qualified to write on this subject.

Although small enough to conveniently carry in a purse or bag, the book is well organized with a large amount of information. It has a unique organization that starts out with a clinical case, which is followed by questions relating to a basic science issue or a clinical issue. This introduction is followed by answers to the questions and a short synopsis of information about the infectious agent including clinical presentations, diagnostic issues based on clinical symptoms and laboratory detection, and then a final section on treatment and prevention. Each chapter also contains several multiple choice questions typical of board examinations, the answers to which are found at the end of the chapter. This is convenient for the reader who does not need to flip back and forth to the back of the book to find answers. At the end of each chapter is a box containing "Microbial pearls" or short statements of the most important issues regarding each infectious agent.

Annotation:

"...another in the Thieme Flexibooks series...color graphics aid in explaining the fundamentals of genetics, including the molecular, cellular, and chromosomal basis of genetics and gene expression."

This wonderful book condenses the currently available knowledge of basic science techniques and mechanisms involved in human genetics, and reviews the applicability of this knowledge to human disease. It displays the information in a visual format in chronological order according to the timing of important discoveries and advances. This the third edition of a book originally published in German in 1994. It was reviewed by Dr. Passarge and published in English in 1995. As the field expanded, it has been published in French, Japanese, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Portuguese, English, Spanish, and Greek.

Dr. Passarge states in the preface the goal of presenting information in a visual manner that would allow easy understanding of the material. In addition, he makes this material available to teachers in need of easy to read art work. Clearly Dr. Passarge continues to do an outstanding job in presenting the information in an easy to grasp manner. He meets his goal easily with the addition of multiple color plates, sketches, and photographs. This is a unique contribution to the field of human genetics - a pocket-sized atlas that readers can carry with them and have available for consultation.

The atlas was conceived as an introductory course on current genetics knowledge with students of biology and medicine in mind. However, this is an outstanding source for clinicians involved in the care of patients with genetic conditions. Clinicians would benefit from reviewing this information to understand genetic mechanisms and their influence in human disease. Dr. Passarge is an outstanding clinician with a faculty appointment at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. He has made unique contributions to the field of medical genetics, human genetics, and dysmorphology and is a member of the American College of Medical Genetics and the Romanian Academy of Medical Sciences.

The book is divided into three main parts: basic, fundamental genetics information; genomics; and application of genetics information to human genetics and medicine. The section on genes in embryonic development is well thought out with wonderful pedagogic charts that can be reproduced and used by teachers of this material. Clearly what stand out in this book are the wonderful illustrations that are simply designed in order to make the material easy to understand. This is a tremendous tool for biology and genetics students in the process of learning the mechanisms of molecular origin that influence human genetic conditions. The illustrations have been updated and expanded to improve clarity.

Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine

17601324

02

Description:
I think any Medical Doctor or Student knows this is the "Golden Bible" of Medicine, so description would not be necessary... Nevertheless, here it is a description:
As an unprecedented amount of medical information bombards you and your patients, where do you go to sort it out and make sense of it all? When your patients request clarification on something they've "printed off" where do you turn for expert explanations? The same trusted resource physicians and students have turned to for over fifty years: Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine. Now more than ever, trust Harrison's to filter and clarify the exploding knowledge base, to highlight the breakthroughs, and to deliver a clear, balanced distillation of the best and most current information on which to base clinical decisions.
The editors attempt to keep step with the advances of the science of medicine while maintaining an appreciation of the art of medicine and the principles underlying the optimal care of the patient. Upon review, it is crystal clear they have been successful. The first chapter illustrates the point by outlining a philosophy and approach to the patient, gently warning of the biases that human physicians can fall prey to, and touch on the challenges for the future. Well done.
The book is for anyone who has the remotest association with the practice of medicine, be they internists, surgeons, nurses, technical staff, or counselors. Clinical Ultrasound in Benign Proctology (2-D and 3-D Anal, Vaginal and Transperineal Techniques)

01

Description:

2-D and 3-D anal ultrasound are among the most recent and advanced tools available for both the diagnosis and the management of anorectal diseases. They are neither expensive nor harmful for the patients and progressively replaced anal mapping with EMG electrodes for the diagnosis of sphincter's defects and anismus, which represents nearly 50% of the cases of chronic constipation. Anal US may provide the clinician with useful information for both classification, diagnosis and management of anorectal sepsis, anal incontinence and anorectal-perineal chronic pain. Almost any case presented in this Atlas shows both imaging and clinical pictures, thus allowing both the radiologist and the clinician to assess the reliability of the exam and the outcome of the selected treatment.

Orthopedic Traumatology - a Resident's Guide

26278061

Description:

There has been very rapid development in computing in recent years and this is now a general trend in the field of orthopedics. Orthopedic trauma is no exception, as there is much enthusiasm surrounding the use of surgical navigation in musculoskeletal trauma. In light of these developments, the successful first edition of this book has been revised and updated. A lot of new information has been added to the original chapter on CAOS (computer-aided orthopedic surgery). Also, as the WHO has published new guidelines on osteoporosis management, together with the many conceptual changes in this area, adding a chapter on osteoporosis is both timely and appropriate. A chapter on hip fracture rehabilitation has also become necessary, not only because it echoes the teachings of the chapter on osteoporosis, but also because of the projected exponential increase in the occurrence of this fracture by the year 2050.

In a concise and well organized manner "Orthopedic Traumatology" discusses the important principles underlying the management of orthopedic trauma, which has undergone significant changes recently. The book will benefit residents in orthopedics as well as orthopedic surgeons in developed and developing countries. It will help educate trainees in orthopedic survey, nursing, physiotherapy and rehabilitation medicine as well as medical students. The book's structure facilitates review of the material before board exams and the quick retrieval of information.

This single-authored, concise, softcover book covers musculoskeletal injuries in adults.

The purpose is to provide a concise and current curriculum for the management of orthopedic trauma which can be used by orthopedic trainees and trained orthopedists preparing for testing in musculoskeletal trauma.

The book is primarily written for orthopedic residents. Other medical professionals caring for adult trauma patients can benefit from its content. The author is an associate professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital, Hong Kong.

The content is organized into 12 sections. The first chapter immediately engages the reader by asking a series of 10 relevant questions which are followed by brief comments. One such question is, "Radiological and clinical outcome: Do they correlate?" Each chapter is written to maximize information with the least amount of words. To this end, the entire book is organized with specific relevant headings followed by a series of sentences written in bullet format. The chapter on traditional and new implants is most informative and very well done. The subject index is thorough. The illustrations are mainly photographs of radiographs, although there are some color photographs. The author chose to ignore the OTA/AO classification of fractures and instead he relies on other conventional descriptions. Clearly missing are line drawings. For instance, the section on calcaneal fractures refers to the angle of Gissane and Bohler without a description of where they are located on the bone. A drawing of these angles would help the reader.

This dictionary is not a handbook for treatment of neuropathies. While many entries provide the latest treatment options, up-to-the-minute therapies are not discussed in bedside level detail. It is not a board review book, because it is not in Q&A format. It could, however, easily serve in that capacity, since each entry is a fairly complete snapshot of a specific disorder or disease." This dictionary is an alphabetical listing of commonly presenting neurological diseases and disorders designed to guide the physician toward the correct clinical diagnosis. The content is focused, problem-based, concise and practical. The structured entries in this practical, clinical resource provide a thumbnail of a wide range of neurological signs.

The Female Pelvic Floor (Function, Dysfunction and Management According to the Integral Theory)

05

Description:

Professor Petros uses the Integral Theory framework to give the anatomical basis for many pelvic floor dysfunctions, a simple diagnostic system to diagnose which structures are causing the problem, simulated operations to check that diagnosis and a new approach to non-surgical therapy. Most importantly, application of the surgical principles detailed in this book will mean more efficient, less invasive and less painful surgery for women suffering from genital prolapse, urinary and faecal dysfunction, and some types of pelvic pain.

This book provides an excellent explanation of the etiologies of pelvic floor dysfunction as well as the approaches to diagnostic and management concepts. This update comes three years after the initial publication.

The book explains the application of the "Integral Theory" in pelvic floor dysfunction. This clinically based biomechanical description of the physics of the pelvic floor anatomy and function delineates the physiologic components of pelvic floor prolapse and incontinence. It is a logical and rational explanation of the manifestations of pelvic floor dysfunction presented in a clear and concise format.

It is particularly useful to residents and practitioners who deal with female pelvic floor dysfunction. The book is the result of the author's careful analysis of both his extensive experience with these types of clinical problems and the continuing developments in this area of medicine.

The book provides a biophysical representation of pelvic floor anatomy as it relates to pelvic floor prolapse and incontinence. It subcategorizes different components of pelvic floor dysfunction into rational, anatomically-based defects and describes the approaches to diagnosing and correcting the clinical manifestations of the defects. The illustrations are particularly useful in demonstrating the author's point.

The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine (5 volume set)

04

Description:

The Gale's popular multi-volume medical encyclopedia, covers more than 1750 disorders, medications, tests, and treatments. As in the previous editions, articles incorporate a definition and related key terms and detail causes and symptoms of the disorder, how diagnoses are made, possible treatments (including alternative treatment methods), and the general prognosis. Articles addressing medical tests discuss preparations, aftercare, risks, and normal/abnormal results. Most of the articles are a minimum of two to three pages long and contain a very brief list of additional resources; some are enhanced with high-quality color photos and diagrams. Although each article is signed and reviewed by a medical advisory board for accuracy, currency, and appropriateness, only ten percent of the 192 contributors are MDs. More than 80 new articles have been added to this edition, addressing such topics as anabolic steroid use, club drugs, SARS, and umbilical-cord blood banking. Unfortunately, updates to many of the earlier articles are minimal, making this edition less useful to those already owning the previous editions. Bottom Line While The Merck Manual of Medical Information: Second Home Edition (2004) covers several of the same disorders and topics, its thematic format makes ready reference more difficult than does Gale's alphabetical arrangement. With entries that are well written in lay language and generally unbiased, this easy-to-use resource is recommended for public or college libraries, particularly those without print or electronic access to the second edition.

Complement and Kidney Disease (Progress in Inflammation Research)

07

Description:

It is evident that a defective or deregulated complement system results in kidney diseases. An important role of complement effector and regulatory proteins in pathological settings of the kidney has been demonstrated. A large panel of distinct human kidney diseases is caused by defective complement control. Genetic analyses have identified mutations in complement regulators that are associated with these diseases. Mutations have been identified in the fluid phase alternative pathway regulator Factor H and the membrane regulator Membrane Cofactor Protein MCP (CD46). The functional characterization of the mutant proteins allows to define the pathophysiological events on a molecular level. These new concepts and data on disease mechanisms allowed establishing new diagnostic and promising therapeutic approaches for several human kidney diseases. Molecular biology, clinics and therapy are discussed in this volume.

Reeder and Felson's Gamuts in Radiology

14757527

Description:

Gamuts in Radiology is the world's most complete, best known, and most trusted guide to radiologic differential diagnosis. Since 1975, radiologists the world over have used 'Gamuts' to ensure that every diagnostic possibility is considered. For the Fourth Edition, Dr. Maurice M. Reeder has assembled an all-new board of Section Editors who have completely revised and updated their respective sections. These editors are among the world's authorities in their respective specialties, and they have given this classic the most complete revamping it has ever had. New features in the fourth edition include: over 250 new gamuts in the areas of ultrasound, magnetic resonance body imaging, and head and neck imaging; more than 80 percent of the previously existing gamuts have been updated; an entire new section on Obestetrical Ultrasound.

This is an update of the classic Gamuts books familiar to just about everyone involved in radiology, last released in 1993. The new edition retains the expected structure of truly comprehensive lists of differential diagnoses that correspond to findings or patterns found on imaging studies.

The authors have long espoused the "triangulation approach to radiographic diagnosis" which consists of accurate analysis of findings on an imaging study, reference to a well constructed list of matching differential diagnoses (a gamut), and correlation with clinical data to reach a single diagnosis or narrow the gamut. The book is intended to serve as "an unobtrusive consultant" that provides complete and accurate lists of differential diagnoses once the interpretation of the films is complete. As previous editions have done, this update meets those goals and brings the content up to date. The latest version has added over 250 new patterns and their gamuts, and updated more than 80 percent of the pre-existing gamuts. The majority of the new differentials are in ultrasound, MR body imaging, and head and neck imaging, reflecting modern techniques and utilization of radiology and significantly enhancing the book's utility.

As it has for many years, this edition of the book serves as a handy shelf reference for radiology residents and experienced imagers to refresh or extend differentials, into esoterica if necessary. Students or junior residents may find it overwhelming, supplying a potentially stupefying array of unfamiliar eponyms, syndromes and diagnoses. For more advanced residents and fellows, however, it can provide a valuable launching point for further study on the listed entities not well in grasp. The established stature of the chief authors and the addition of 20 section editors and consultants in various subspecialties uphold the longstanding credibility of the information provided.

In a continued effort to provide comprehensive gamuts for the majority of imaging findings, content is limited to lists of diagnoses, nearly entirely without explanation. To do otherwise would be impossibly inaccessible. Despite the enormity of the undertaking, the organization is logical and prevents an unwieldy reference. Each differential is prioritized by incidence, letting exceedingly rare diagnoses fall to the end of the lists. Globally, the material is divided into nine anatomical sections, including gamuts for any relevant imaging modalities, prefaced by an list of the included gamuts that is easily scanned. Three additional sections cover multiple system disorders, including diseases encountered in developing nations, and dedicated sections to MR imaging, and obstetrical ultrasound with the same prefacing and prioritization of differentials. The index is understandably limited, given the scope of the text, and serves little purpose beyond the section-leading lists of gamuts.

Atlas Of MusculoSkeletal Ultrasound Anatomy

15381944

Description:

Musculoskeletal ultrasound is an increasingly widely used technique, but relatively few centres undertake enough scanning to have developed the requisite level of expertise and anatomical knowledge. This book is aimed at the radiology trainee, the practising radiologist with an interest in musculoskeletal work, sonographers and other clinicians in related disciplines such as orthopaedics and sports medicine, who are getting more directly involved in ultrasound at a 'hands-on' level. It aims to provide the reader with the essential grounding in normal ultrasound anatomy that they require in order to be able to assess when this anatomy is disrupted through injury and/or disease. The book will be structured systemically, each anatomical area of interest being covered by high quality ultrasound scans and accompanying, concise text. Around 100 individual anatomical descriptions are included in total and the ultrasound images presented would be a mixture of axial, sagital or coronal, to best illustrate the anatomy being described. Wherever possible, unlabelled versions of each scan will be set alongside anatomically labelled versions for clarity, and MR images are occasionally used for comparative purposes throughout the book.

Harper's Illustrated BioChemistry

14561653

Description:

UP TO DATE, SUCCINCT, AND MEDICALLY RELEVANT

Harper's Biochemistry offers concise yet authoritative coverage of the principles of biochemistry and molecular biology.

“Not only is this an excellent text on biochemistry, it also gives you the essentials in molecular biology. The book has excellent illustrations and even focuses on many clinical aspects.”*

*Reflects the significant advances in biochemistry that are important to medicine
*Includes new chapters on amino acids and peptides, primary structure of proteins, and the Human Genome Project
*New and expanded coverage of the mechanisms of action of enzymes, receptors involved in lipoprotein metabolism and reverse cholesterol transport, RNA synthesis, gene regulation, molecular mechanisms of hormone action, and pharmacogenomics
*Includes clinical correlations and chapter summaries
*More than 500 clear, descriptive illustrations

This book provides an overview of biochemistry with an emphasis on topics thought to be relevant to medical students.

The goal of this long-running series is to provide detailed coverage of all aspects of biochemistry as applied to medicine. For many students, this is a convenient (and relatively inexpensive) review book. Overall, the coverage is reasonable and users seeking specific information are likely to find it. Integration with clinical problems is lacking as is an organization that would make better sense given the stated objectives.

This book is intended primarily for medical students either as an auxiliary text or as a convenient review source when preparing for the USMLE part I examination.

This edition provides a thorough presentation of all aspects of biochemistry relevant to medical students. Changes from the previous edition include some condensation of material, a limited amount of revision and new material, primarily in the area of recombinant DNA (including a short chapter on the human genome). The terse style allows for considerable detail, especially in metabolic pathway presentation. The coverage of the endocrine system and the role of hormones is effective. Initial chapters discuss general structural principles of proteins, carbohydrates and lipids, and the function and general mechanism of enzymes. All aspects of intermediary metabolism are discussed as well as material dealing with membranes, specialized tissues (muscle, formed elements of blood etc.), vitamins and general features of nutrition. The teaching of biochemistry in medical school has evolved, however, and the overall organization of this book would not serve effectively for many students. Thus, the section on metabolism gives little sense of integration and control. Regrettably, there are no quick fixes to deal with the increasing amount of material in this field:the student is advised to learn principles rather than memorize reactions. Application in context will be easier under such circumstances. Those needing a compilation that is thorough and concise will find this book of value.

Primary Retinal Detachment - Options for Repair

23652910

Description:

This information-packed volume is the ultimate guide for today's vitreo-retinal surgeon. It is written by leading experts in the field.

The book begins with an extensive review, analyzing the evolution of present-day detachment surgery over the past 70 years. Here, a changing pattern of treatment modalities comes into view, with four primary procedures in use at the beginning of the twenty-first century.

Experts in the field of retinal and vitreous surgery then describe the following surgical techniques: cerclage with drainage, pneumatic retinopexy, primary vitrectomy, and minimal segmental buckling without drainage. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are assessed in relation to case selection, single operation attachment, final attachment, complications, visual function, and cost effectiveness. The techniques are then compared with each other.

The volume continues with a description of the use of modern adjuvant pharmacotherapy (intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide, anti-metabolites, fluorouracil, daunorubicin, heparin, etc.) to improve the surgical and functional outcome of these techniques.

Finally, in the chapter entitled "Outlook for the Future," new imaging techniques (ballistic light imaging, refined ultrasonography, wide angle pseudo color SLO, etc.) and anti-proliferative drugs are discussed.

Ophthalmologists, fellows in retinal and vitreous surgery, and students and residents will find this book essential for diagnosing and repairing a primary retinal detachment: The book contains instructive, color computer drawings and tables.

Vander's Renal Physiology

14292576

Description:

This concise overview of renal physiology introduces basic science principles and their relevance in the clinical expression of disease. Each chapter incorporates a wealth of pedagogical aids including: study questions, learning objectives, and clinical examples. Also serves as a good review for the USMLE Step 1.

MASTERY OF CONCEPTS – NOT MEMORIZATION OF FACTS

Concise and readable, this text explores the fundamental aspects of renal physiology that are essential for an understanding of clinical medicine.

RIGHT TO THE POINT
*Offers the best review for the USMLE Step 1
*Presents the normal functions of the kidney with clinical correlations to disease states
*Offers current research on the molecular and genetic principles underlying renal physiology
*Describes the interrelationships between blood pressure and renal function
*Includes key concepts, learning objectives, clinical examples, and study questions
*Provides a high-yield review of the concepts and functions of renal physiology
*Explains difficult concepts thoroughly, without oversimplification

This book covers the most essential elements of renal physiology. Instead of focusing on minute facts and details, the authors provide a clear but comprehensive discussion of mechanisms and processes pertinent to the kidney. Topics are presented in an organized manner, complete with easily understandable and relevant tables and figures.

The book is an absolute must for beginning readers. The book was written for students. From my point of view, it is a good book for medical students or any other students interested in patient care or renal physiology research.

It covers renal anatomy, renal blood flow, glomerular filtration, functions of each segment of the nephron, control/regulation of water, sodium, potassium balance as well as other electrolytes. The book also covers the kidney's role in regulating blood pressure. Each of the chapters is well written and easy to understand. My favorite is the "clearance" chapter. It was presented in a clear and simple way. Shortcomings: there were tables that were incorrect:Figure 6-6 page 87:transport proteins were incorrectly placed.

The Sentinel Lymph Node Concept

23998815

Description:

The Sentinel Lymph Node Concept is evaluated from the points of view of pathology, radiodiagnosis and nuclear medicine diagnostics, surgical treatment and clinical oncology. The concept and its practical applications are analyzed for breast cancer, malignant melanoma, tumors of the face, oropharynx, lung, gastrointestinal and urogenital tracts. The first part of the book describes the function and use of the nuclear medicine equipment, the tracers used, colloid solutions and modern developments in histological and immunohistochemical lymph node investigations, as well as possible pitfalls. The consequences of false-negative results are clearly delineated. In the second part, specific tumor-related problems are described.

This book gives an overview of the sentinel lymph node concept, including detailed descriptions of methods and devices used for sentinel lymph node detection. It includes both theoretical and practical aspects of the status of sentinel lymph node concept in a variety of sites throughout the body.

According to the authors, the aims of this book are to provide information regarding lymphatic drainage, sentinel lymph node labeling techniques, and to provide information regarding preoperative and intraoperative pathological tumor characterization as it applies to multiple tumor types. In addition, the book provides a summary of adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies. There is a bewildering number of papers that have been published on this topic over the last 15 years, and this book is necessary to summarize the information. The book does serve the authors' objectives, but as happens with any book in a rapidly changing field, it is quickly outdated.

Practitioners of multiple specialties will find this book informative, including radiologists, pathologists, surgeons, and medical oncologists. The book is more detailed than most general practitioners would need, but it will serve as a good resource for generalists. This multiauthored book is written primarily by German physicians, so it predominantly reflects the European sentinel node experience.

The first portion of the book gives a general overview of the sentinel node, including a definition, various technical aspects of sentinel node detection, and lymphatic drainage. It includes controversial topics such as the significance of micrometastases and discusses the detection rate and accuracy of the technique. The second portion reviews individual tumor sites/types and gives detailed information concerning each one. As expected, the longest section is on breast cancer, for which there is a large body of experience and literature. Melanoma is also discussed in some detail, as are some less common carcinomas, such as lung cancer, neuroendocrine tumors, and prostate cancer. The final chapter of the book appears almost as an addendum, with therapeutic regimens of each tumor type listed. The illustrations are abundant and quite clear, ranging from photos of actual equipment to radiographs and photomicrographs. Abundant tables and diagrams also add to the ease of understanding the information presented.

Pediatric Surgery (Springer)

02

Description:

International leading pediatric surgeons have dedicated themselves to the care of the pediatric surgical patient. This up-to-date analysis of current practice provides comprehensive details and assists the pediatric surgeon to diagnose, treat and manage pediatric surgical problems.

This is a fascinating book in that it is not truly a textbook of pediatric surgery, but rather an atlas of surgical techniques with a small amount of introductory text in each of 59 chapters. Essentially, these surgical drawings illustrate various operations used for the correction of malformations in children with a short discussion of the disease process. The drawings are excellent and copious and conclude with a very short list of selected readings at the end of each chapter.

The editors state their purpose was "to provide a comprehensive description of operative techniques for various conditions in children." To the extent that these descriptions are visual they have succeeded admirably with the first new pediatric surgical atlas published in several years. The field certainly needed an update in this area, not just in minimally invasive techniques, as has been done several times in the past 2 to 3 years.

The editors indicate that the book was prepared for "trainees in paediatric surgery, established paediatric surgeons, urologists and general surgeons with an interest in paediatric surgery." However, it will be most used and valuable to the first and last groups mentioned. The clarity of presentation will make this book quite readable for trainees. Unfortunately, the massive use of "589 color figures, in 666 separate illustrations" also makes this book very expensive for the group that can most benefit from it. The editors are two well known and qualified pediatric surgeons from Ireland and Austria. There are 65 authors in total from all five continents. Most are very well known, well qualified, and generally previous authors in the areas that are illustrated in their chapters.

The 59 chapters are divided into eight anatomical or subspecialty areas. For instance, the editors begin with head and neck, proceed to esophagus, chest, abdomen, but separate out the procedures that pertain to liver, pancreas, and spleen. The editors then switch to three subspecialty areas: spina bifida and hydrocephalus, tumors, and urology. One can question why the ACE (antegrade continence enema) procedure is the last chapter under the urology procedures since all the drawings deal with intestinal surgery; however, the format functions well and for the most part allows rapid identification of the procedure sought. The drawings have all been harmonized to the same style and coloration. They are copious in number and very well done. They are well numbered and matched against the text with the same numbering process. This book is without references or index. There is a very short section of selected bibliography at the end of each chapter. For the most part, these are well done, but occasionally are parochial in primarily citing the author's articles to the exclusion of better references.

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit

19697326

Description:

In the past, many tropical and parasitic infections were confined to tropical areas of the world located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. However, with the increase in air travel and tourism and the changing patterns of immigration, an increasing number of individuals are coming into contact with these infectious agents and transmission across the world has been enhanced.

Tropical and Parasitic Infections in the Intensive Care Unit provides an international perspective on this topic and an overview of those infections that may cause critical illness.

An overview is provided from a multinational perspective on tropical bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections in the critical care unit.

Staff practitioners and senior house officers are an appropriate audience for this work, which comes from noted editors in North America and South Africa.

The book is divided into South African and North American perspectives on a variety of problems including malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, parasitic and fungal infections. The 12 chapters are cleanly written with occasional tables. Each chapter contains a reference list dating to within two years of publication. Citations represent original rather than secondary sources. A succinct table of contents provides chapter title, authorship and whether the perspective comes from South Africa or North America. A subject index of less than 10 pages, clearly adequate to describe content of the monograph, concludes.

Description:

Thoroughly revised and updated for its Third Edition, this highly acclaimed volume is the most comprehensive reference on hospital epidemiology and infection control. In 115 chapters written by over 150 leading experts, the book examines every type of hospital-acquired (nosocomial) infection and addresses every issue relating to surveillance, prevention, and control of these infections in patients and in healthcare workers. This edition features two brand-new sections: a six-chapter section on bioterrorism and a five-chapter section on healthcare quality improvement. Other new chapters cover using the personal computer for healthcare epidemiology; infections associated with xenotransplantation; nosocomial bacteremia; and filamentous fungi.

This new book is a multiauthored, encyclopedic text covering epidemiology and biostatistics, nosocomial infections categorized in separate sections by organ involved and by pathogen, infections related to specific procedures such as endoscopy or cardiac catheterization, infections unique to hospital support services, fractions in health care workers, and several other specialized areas. Very useful chapters on special populations, anesthesia-related infections, spinal cord injury patients, and nosocomial legionella disease each present comprehensive background and practical guidelines for surveillance and control. The editor has intended to cover all of the information pertinent to hospital epidemiology and infection control including program organization, data management, decision analysis, and quality improvement. The author has succeeded in providing a comprehensive, very useful reference where no previous textbook has achieved this purpose. Although intended for hospital epidemiologists and infection control practitioners, the book will be an excellent and practical reference for infectious disease residents, fellows, and clinicians seeking authoritative information in the field. The organization is well displayed in the table of contents, and the index is comprehensive and well documented. It contains useful summary-type tables compiled by each author. The illustrations are appropriately chosen and usually well described either in the text or the legend. All the current summaries of the CDC infection control guidelines are also included, and therefore available in one place. With this book, Dr. Mayhall has succeeded in providing his readers with a comprehensive, well-written,and useful reference text in the field. All aspects are covered in a way that the reader with a question or problem can find current information as well as detailed and practical solutions without having to consult other sources. The book's organization is complex and promotes some repetition of the material, but the information is located logically for the reader. This book will become the standard and should be read by epidemiologists, infection control practitioners, and clinicians in the field.

Extensively revised and updated to reflect the current state of knowledge in the study of aging, the third edition of the bestselling Physiological Basis of Aging and Geriatrics provides an even more complete profile of the aging of individuals and populations. It includes aspects of demographic, comparative, and differential aging together with a discussion of the several theories of aging. It shows how body functions change with aging, describes how both genetic and environmental factors influence aging-related changes, and addresses some of the clinical consequences of these changes for health and longevity.Divided into three main sections, the book first provides a broad and solid background in basic processes of biogerontology. Then it presents a survey of the aging of body systems, focusing on maintenance of optimal function and ability to adapt to environmental demands. Finally, it provides a synopsis of pharmacologic, nutritional, and physical exercise guidelines for preserving physical and mental health into old age. This book collects up-to-date information from internationally renowned experts in various biologic fields using physiology as the unifying concept. Illustrated with numerous tables and graphs, Physiological Basis of Aging and Geriatrics, Third Edition focuses on the established facts of physiological aging to provide an essential reference book for a wide spectrum of readers with different levels of biological and educational backgrounds.

The book describes the physiology of aging and physiological events accompanying aging. It is an important book that describes molecular and cellular aging, systemic and organismic aging, prevention and rehabilitation, and general theories of gerontology and aging. The purpose is to describe events and mechanisms of aging particularly from a physiologic and descriptive perspective. This is a large undertaking, and this second edition covers a wide array of topics on the physiology of geriatrics and gerontology. The book is written for a broad spectrum of individuals with varying biological backgrounds. It would be most useful for post-accalaureate physiologists, geriatricians, or gerontologists. It is written at a graduate student, resident, faculty level and contains a host of graphs and figures giving considerable original data. The book would also be suitable for a researcher who wanted an introductory or starting point for physiologic research in aging. It contains excellent illustrations, figures, and data. One difficulty, however, is that although references to very current data are given, this results in more of an updating than an integration; many references from 1988-1994 are not included. Unique to the book are a large number of very helpful summary diagrams chock full of data. This book is the benchmark text in the field. The second edition is disappointing only in the fact that it is more of an updating than an integration of new data, advances, and ideas since 1988. Also, there is a notable lack of molecular biology and molecular genetics in some areas. However, these shortcomings are minor, and the book deserves to be on appropriate shelves as the definitive text in this area.

This book is an in-depth look at the pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the most important infections afflicting elderly persons. In the first section the focus is on unique concepts and principles of infections with aging including epidemiology, risk factors, and clinical features, as well as principles of antimicrobial therapy. The pathogenesis, clinical and laboratory diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the most important and frequent infections suffered by the geriatric population are addressed in subsequent sections, ranging from the common infectious diseases such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection, and skin and soft tissue infections to focal life-threatening infections such as orofacial/odontogenic infections and malignant external otitis. The special diagnostic and therapeutic problems encountered by clinicians who care for elderly patients with these infectious diseases are emphasized. In the final section issues such as infections in a long-term care setting, infections in diabetics, multi-drug resistant organisms, vaccinations, and nutrition are covered.

This text is a comprehensive overview of infectious diseases complications among the growing number of elderly patients in the U.S. It is designed to be a broad overview rather than a definitive resource for an individual infectious ailment. The editors clearly state that the book is geared towards individuals in multiple disciplines of healthcare (clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, and trainees). It is not intended to be the ultimate resource on a particular infectious disease problem or to serve as a reference for subspecialists in infectious diseases, geriatrics, or microbiology. It is a quick, comprehensive guide for generalists. It is also of particular value to those working in long-term care facilities. The editors and most of the contributors are acknowledged experts in the topics they have authored. This book is subdivided into three well-organized sections: concepts and principles of infection among the aged (including a review of the changing immune systems of the elderly and an overview of recent epidemiologic trends among the elderly); chapters on common infectious diseases (i.e., endocarditis, UTIs); and chapters on unique concerns among elderly such as management of infections in the long-term care setting. The greatest strengths are in the areas not covered in most texts: immunization, prevention, and altered pharmacodynamics. Contributors to the first part of the text provide a broad overview of the unique problems with treating infectious diseases in the elderly: altered clinical presentation, higher morbidity/mortality, antibiotic pharmacodynamics, and toxicity. The subsequent chapters are devoted to organ systems. Each of these chapters is quite complete, withreviews of the changing epidemiology, common clinical syndromes, diagnosis, and brief highlights of treatment. The breadth of the topics limits its use for the management of complicated infectious disease cases however, as it is not designed to serve such a purpose. The references and index are well organized and contain up-to-date references. This is an excellent quick review of the pertinent infectious diseases issues among the geriatric population. This is not an exhaustive review of any specific topic, but important controversial issues are addressed, such as the management of asymptomatic bacteremia among the elderly. The value of this text is enhanced by the topics covered that are often overlooked in others including multi-drug-resistant bacterial infections, long-term care-related problems, and immunization issues among the elderly.

Anemia in the Elderly

19440854

Description:

Anemia in the elderly has been properly defined as the silent epidemic, representing 3 million people in the United States aged 65 years and older. Incidence and prevalence of this condition increase with age. It differs in its etiology, pathogenesis and treatment from anemia in children and younger adults. Anemia is associated with reduced survival, increased risk of functional dependence and hospitalization, increased risk of congestive heart failure and stage renal disease and cognitive disorders. Approximately 70% of anemia in older individuals is reversible.

This multiauthored monograph on anemia in older persons discusses the nature of aging and red cell levels in the body as well as the various causes of anemia in older persons.

Its purpose is to review the nature of anemia in older persons. The book succeeds admirably.

The audience is hematologists and physicians treating older persons and researchers of blood physiology. The authors are experts in the field.

The book discusses the epidemiology, causes, and treatment of anemia in older persons. The pathophysiology involved is discussed in great detail. Excellent illustrations and diagrams enhance the presentations throughout. The book concludes with a discussion of the impact of anemia on the function of older persons and the relationship of anemia to frailty.

Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis - an Integrated Approach

08

Description:

In the past decade it has become increasingly clear that psoriatic disease, both of the skin and joints, can be a significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for the physician and a debilitating illness for the patient. At the same time, advances in genetics and immunology have increased our understanding of the pathophysiology of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. This text contains a comprehensive discussion by an international group of experts in psoriatic disease of the pathomechanisms, genetics, diagnosis, and treatment of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. The information is presented in parallel in order to emphasize the similarities and differences between these two diseases that so commonly occur together. We believe that this approach will make this text an important resource for all practitioners who treat patients with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis.

The goal of this book is to integrate information about psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis to help specialists understand the whole spectrum of these diseases. To this end, the book is set up in sections addressing genetics, presentation, treatment, etc. The first chapter in each section addresses psoriasis and the next answers the same question with regard to psoriatic arthritis.

Too often psoriasis is addressed by dermatologists, and psoriatic arthritis by rheumatologists, without any understanding or coordination between the two groups of specialists. This book attempts to redress this issue by synthesizing, comparing, and reviewing, information on both diseases. There is significant overlap between the two diseases and knowledge of the two by both specialties will greatly serve to improve care and research of each.

The book is written for dermatologists and rheumatologists, but would be useful for any practitioner who sees patients with either psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis on a regular basis. Also, researchers would benefit from this in-depth, side-by-side, comparison of the two conditions. The authors are leaders in their fields.

The book is arranged in sections addressing genetics, epidemiology, presentation, therapies and other aspects of disease. The first chapter in each section addresses psoriasis, the second, psoriatic arthritis. Because of this unusual layout, it is possible to compare, contrast, and synthesize the information about the two conditions which can lead to better understanding of the overlap of these two. Unfortunately, this also leads to significant overlap of information.
